Film Bloopers That Made the Cut and Became Legendary

by

Actors, like the rest of us, make mistakes while filming. But many of them have enough skill to stay in character and pull it off. Others ad-lib lines that weren’t in the script and directors know in that instant that they will become iconic moments. Some just happen, some are planned, some are off-camera incidents and some are included in the movies to make the scene livelier for the audiences. Film Bloopers know no boundaries – they happen in the best of the movies to the best of the actors and directors we know of. Here are some examples to leave you spellbound.

Titanic

Titanic visualizes the deadly incident of the ship sinking in the middle of the ocean after colliding with an iceberg. Although this movie brings a lot of emotional turmoil, there is a scene that is just magical involving Leonardo DiCaprio. You have probably noticed how masterful he is with improv lines. When he opted to shout “I’m the king of the world” in one scene, it sounded so impressive that James Cameron elected to keep it. That particular scene felt right and most importantly, it sounded convincing, and no matter how cheesy it sounded, it worked well.

The Godfather

“Bonasera, Bonasera, what have I ever done to get such disrespect from you?” That scene depicting Vito Corleone was powerful and remarkable in many ways. More especially the way this iconic character from the film The Godfather strokes a kitten was noticed by a lot of people. The mob boss, played by Marlon Brando, made an impact on audiences around the world. The scene where he sits stroking a kitten made him look even more intimidating. As it turns out, the kitten wandered on set, and Brando picked it up. That kitten slipped into character like it was an old shoe!

The 40-year-old Virgin

If you watched the 40-year-old virgin, probably you’ve noticed and liked Steve Carrell and his quick sharp wit. His short and witty remarks made this beloved character even more memorable to those who have watched this movie. A particularly interesting fact about this movie is that there are many one-liners in the film that were not even in the script. And the scene where Carrell gets his chest waxed, his response is authentic as he insisted on an actual waxing, and his oath, “Kelly Clarkson!” was an ad-lib. After reading this, you will never see this movie the same again!

Full Metal Jacket

This is an iconic movie about the Vietnam War and featured an unforgiving sergeant, who challenged his men to be all they could be. R. Lee Ermey was not initially cast for the film as he was meant to be a technical director. But his experience as a drill instructor got directors to cast him. The scene where he meets the recruits at first display how knowledgeable he is with the life of a drill instructor. He was the perfect man for the job and showed it how it is at Parris Island, where the great Marine Corps is made.

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing is one of the movies that are so inspiring they can get you on your feet and start moving to the beat. It was one of the breakout films of the 1980s, and everyone wanted to be able to dance like Johnny and Baby. One of the scenes that have become the favorites of many is actually blooper. During the film, while Johnny and Baby were rehearsing, they crawled across the floor toward each other. It turns out that Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey were horsing around in that scene and were not filming that part for the movie.

The Shining

Stephen King is a great author with some of his novels turned into beautiful Oscar award-winning movies. One of those movies that was nominated for 2 Oscars is called The Shining. The movie brought to life Stephen King’s book of the same name. In it, we saw Jack Nicholson portray an author as he unravels mentally into a deranged state. The scene that was actually a blooper here is when Nicholson yelled, “Here’s Johnny!” The scene was off-script but the director decided to include it in the movie and it is one of the most famous lines from the film.

Jaws

We were all terrified by the debut of Jaws, a film about the eponymous shark that wreaks havoc on a small seaside town. The movie has impeccable visuals and the script was so perfect but a last-minute adjustment was made. The line that was included last-minute in the movie is the most memorable one. That memorable line is arguably, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” This line was not in the original script and referred to a joke that crew members were making about limited filming space onboard. The line was included in the movie’s trailer and drew many people to watch this film.

A Few Good Men

In the movie titled A Few Good Men, Jack Nicholson was required to take the stand in a military court. That is when Jack delivered another iconic line in this film that was not initially included in the script. Playing the role of General Nathan Jessop, he gathered momentum when testifying in a military court with Tom Cruise’s character cross-examining him. On that scene, he said, “You can’t handle the truth!” and that line was not in the original script, but as Nicholson delved deeper into his role, directors decided to keep it. The line added more emotion to the character and is one of the most unforgettable scenes.

Casablanca

“Here’s looking at you, kid.” This is undoubtedly one of the most famous film lines of all time. Despite its popularity, that line was not included in the original script. It might be hard to accept this fact because it is so strange to think that the line Humphrey Bogart delivered to Ingrid Bergman wasn’t in the script. The line originated from Humphrey when he first used it while teaching her to play poker and liked it so much that he snuck it into his lines. The movie is still one of the greatest nonetheless and this blooper actually made it much more awesome.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

How often does nature have an effect on the screenplay of a movie? In most movies, nature plays a small role because everything is planned and directed by the director. Well, in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, nature played a quite dramatic role. There is one scene where nature has added a striking, natural effect to the movie scene when the wind blew a little too hard. Eowyn is looking out at the horizon in this particular scene when suddenly one of the nearby flags is ripped from its pole by the wind. This event creates more drama in the scene but was totally unplanned.

Forrest Gump

In Forrest Gump, the movie is surrounded by fun moments that bring a great chuckle to those watching it. Amongst the several comedic moments, there is one remarkable one of which was when Forrest and Bubba met. When Bubba introduced himself, he used his full name and said to Forrest, “My given name is Benjamin Beauford Blue. People call me Bubba”. Forrest did not deviate from the character but continued as if nothing different had just happened. That added more comedy to the movie but that line was not included in the original script but Tom Hanks surely did nail it.

The Avengers

When on set, actors are told when to sit up, down and even eat but Tony Stark managed to beat the system and have food whenever he wanted to. The character played by Robert Downey Jr. eats an awful lot of snacks when filming. Some might wonder if his role was to eat that much during the filming of the movie. Well, the truth is that he had the munchies so much when on set that the director decided to make it a part of his character as Tony Stark. The snacks came from the craft services table, which Downey took an immense liking too. We must say, the munching added an interesting and natural element to his character.

The Dark Knight

Some actors would like to have their own way when it comes to sarcasm, wit and puns, you have to admit that it is the most natural way to do it. One of the movies where this happened was on “The Dark Knight.” Everyone enjoyed this iconic Batman movie made in 2008 and featuring the talented Heath Ledger. Wanting to add his own evil spin to the Joker character, Ledger included great entertaining elements of sarcasm. The most notable example was his slow, mocking clapping from his prison cell at one stage, giving another nasty dimension to this loathsome character.

Rocky

Rocky is definitely a favorite franchise from the previous century. The movie is very remarkable because of a couple of reasons. The most prominent reason is that the first movie was created on a shoestring budget, Rocky took to the streets running. The neighborhood was never warned but everything just happened so spontaneously. Those around him never had a clue that they were going to be in this movie and there were no demarcations signaling that filming was in progress. The orange throwing scene was also totally spontaneous, with the producers never dreaming of its future success as a franchise.

If you were to calculate the number of times Robert Downey Jr. ate snacks during filming, you would easily lose count. Well, Tony Stark needed to keep his energy up by constantly snacking on whatever is available. Hauling that Iron Man suit is no joke and can burn up quite an appetite and Tony Stark needed the extra energy he could get. Grabbing a handful of blueberries and offering these to his co-characters such as Captain America or Bruce Banner in the middle of a scene, became a key element of this movie. Robert Downey Jr. was so hungry, the producers had no option but to run with his appetite.

Scream

Imagine if you were acting the role of a killer and reach out to somewhere a gun should be in place and find nothing. Those are the kind of moments that send directors screaming “Cut!” but not in this movie. Matthew Lillard played the role of killer Stuart Macher in this movie. In one scene, he reaches for a gun in a nearby drawer, only to find it isn’t there as planned. Improvising as the pro he is, he states, “Houston we have a problem,” rather than having to redo the entire scene. Even though he is the killer, this moment added more suspense.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Sometimes it can get very hot when filming and the body temperature just skyrockets when those lights turn on. A lot of actors may be dumbfounded when icing starts melting off their faces. What do you do when the icing on your face is beginning to melt under hot movie lights and the elevated body temperature? It was no problem for Robin William. As the consummate actor he was, he rescued the moment when the icing began dripping into Mrs. Sellner’s coffee. Quickly, Robin improvised by saying she had her cream and sugar too with her coffee. A brilliant moment.

American Beauty

In American Beauty, there is a scene where the character manifests great surprise making the scene look very authentic and realistic. Leave it to Kevin Spacey to take a basic scene and turn it into one of brilliance. Intended to angrily throw a plate against a wall, Spacey instead flung it at the wall behind Thora Birch the character was so surprised. Her reaction was one of complete shock, making viewers question whether acting can ever be as completely genuine as real life. The movie had an extra feeling of authenticity and genuineness added to it from this scene.

Raiders of The Lost Ark

Indy is the man with a plan, or so you thought. When he meets a warrior with a sword, there was supposed to be a duel to the death. However, Harrison Ford had food poisoning that day on set. The script was rewritten on the exact day of shooting, and Indiana Jones improvised on the scene and just pulled out a revolver gun to get rid of the fighter. As a result, the moment has become one of the most recognizable in movie history and you will probably remember this scene forever now that you know it was a blooper.

Guardians of the Galaxy

After dropping something we suspect might break there is a moment of shock as we try to assess what just happened. In Guardians of the Galaxy, this does not happen when Chris Pratt drops an orb. That scene is when this character has butterfingers and drops an orb, but doesn’t break a sweat as he makes it a relatable part of his character. This little faux-pas made the hero so much more approachable, so the director made the decision to keep it in the movie. The scene was golden and made the character look very powerful as some saw this part of the movie.

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back

In the history of movies, there are a lot of awkward scenes that show the words said after hearing someone say “I love you.” That list of awkward responses has been completed by the scene on “Star Wars – The Empire Strikes Back. If you have wondered that is the worst response to “I love you”? You’ve got it. “I know.” That’s how Han Solo replied to Princess Leia in Star Wars. It has become so memorable that the response has been used in other movies and real life – to show someone indirectly that you don’t feel the same way in not so many words.

The Princess Diaries

Anne Hathaway shares some of her Mia character’s traits in this movie. Mia is the clumsiest character in the movie and Anne depicted a bit of the character’s traits inadvertently. Although most of the clumsiness is directed in the movie, there is a scene where it was genuine and authentic. Who knew this lovely actress could be just as clumsy as the character she was playing? The answer is no one but the movie proved otherwise. Falling off the bleachers when chatting with her best friend was not planned, but it was so funny that it stayed in the movie.

Django Unchained

Django Unchained has an emotional storyline and the actors and actresses have outdone themselves in their characters depicted on this movie. One of the most remarkable scenes is when one of the actors injures himself to complete his character. DiCaprio is known for his superb acting talent. When he breaks a glass in his hand and starts bleeding all over the place, what does he do? He finishes the scene, of course instead of focusing on the pain and the bleeding. He only got medical attention right after the act but his pro approach has made this scene quite legendary.

The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs is a great thriller movie that had a goosebump-inducing blooper. The scene builds up great suspense and makes the watchers glued to their screen because of the how Anthony Hopkins played his character. In the movie this actor included hissing sounds to ramp up suspense when sharing how many people he has murdered. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant, and he convinced Jodie of how evil he was in a brief 25 minutes. So much so that she hardly had to plan her response. His great performance continues to chill to the bone as the storyline unfolds.

The Usual Suspects

The Usual Suspects has an intense storyline that requires some of the characters to be serious at all times. Although that is true, there is a blooper scene that changed the perspective of watchers about this movie. Being serious sometimes just has to be lightened up with a case of spontaneous giggling. This is what happens in one scene in this movie. The director lost control despite efforts to get back to the script, but he lost the battle. The upshot? The natural giggling responses stayed. That blooper scene gets very magical and has a lasting effect on the minds of the fan’s of this movie.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has a great blooper that was used on the final version of the movie. When the actors and actresses aren’t on the same page, things can get funny. In the movie, one of actors was totally lost and the directors filmed everything and included it in this film. On set, Jim Carrey thought Kate Winslet was meant to be in one of his scenes. In a panic, he looks around for her. The cameraman captures his genuine concern for his co-star but it was misplaced. She wasn’t meant to be there after all.

The Amazing Spider-Man

If you enjoyed watching The Amazing Spider-Man, there is a particular scene that might have got to you. You probably enjoyed the scene between Peter Parker and a police captain that resulted in a great comedic moment.”Do I look like the mayor of Tokyo?” was an impromptu joke made by the police captain as a Godzilla reference because he didn’t believe what Peter Parker was saying when he asked for help. It resulted in a comedic moment that was actually not meant to be there, providing a moment of concern as to whether Spiderman or The Lizard would triumph in the end.

Thor: The Dark World

Another one from Marvel’s great screenplay and directorship’s repertoire is the movie titled “Thor: The Dark World.” The movie showed that just because you’re one of the most powerful superheroes in the universe, doesn’t mean you don’t have to be a gentleman. Chris Hemsworth was exactly that when he hung his giant hammer onto a nearby coat hook to be sure he was tidy. It was a little bit unexpected, even to the directors and the scriptwriters. Although it was a bit off-script but it included a lot of personality and that was guaranteed to add appeal to comical movie fans.

Rain Man

One of the most embarrassing bloopers is found when watching the Rain Man. Both actors Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise delivered stellar performances in this film, which was a surprising success. The scene where the blooper took place was when the duo was in the phone booth together. Tom Cruise’s character takes his brother with him inside the phone booth to prevent him from wandering off. When filming, the worst imaginable thing happened because Hoffman genuinely passed gas, which wasn’t in the script. Surprisingly both actors stayed in character and the camera kept on rolling, and the scene is among fans’ favorites.

Taxi Driver

A young Robert DeNiro delivered an outstanding performance in this film. The storyline and the screenplay for him was quite simple and straightforward because he was only supposed to talk to himself in the mirror. Although this might sound very boring and uninteresting, DeNiro brought his A-game even when playing this role. You probably remember his subsequent monologue saying, “Are you talking to me? Are you talking to me?” That scene wasn’t in the movie but it was improvised and unscripted. That made the scene have much more emotion and brought it to life that it would ever be and that is why it is more than memorable for most moviegoers.
