Oppo Reno Z Full Review
Oppo Reno Z is pleasing to the eye as the device features a stunning design. The cameras sit perfectly with the rear surface of the device which means there is no protrusion. This is good as it gives the device a minimalist look. Protection is offered by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 both in the front and at the back, with the glass on the back curves to meet the rounded metal edges of the phone.
The phone is big and a bit heavy which makes it a bit difficult to handle with one hand. The power button is placed on the right which makes for easy access while the volume rocker is placed on the left side of the phone.
There is a 3.5mm audio headphone jack as well as a USB Type-C port on the bottom of the device. Also, an optical in-display fingerprint scanner is placed under the 6.4-inch AMOLED touchscreen. Oppo Reno Z is available in the following colours; Jet Black, Ocean Green, Nebula Purple, Pink Mist.
The phone features a flat 6.4-inch Full HD AMOLED touchscreen display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The screen quality is good overall as details are sharp enough at arm’s length, making it a great device for movie viewing and gaming. Colours are well balanced and do not overly saturate reds or oranges as is often the case with mid-range AMOLED screen devices. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 in case the device falls.
Oppo Reno Z is powered by a Mediatek MT6779 Helio P90 (12nm) chipset. The CPU is Octa-core (2×2.2 GHz Cortex-A75 & 6×2.0 GHz Cortex-A55) while graphics is handled by a PowerVR GM9446 GPU. The device comes with either 4GB, 6GB or 8GB RAM. The higher internal storage and RAM configurations will certainly excite a gamer.
The device runs the latest Android 9.0 Pie OS. Handling regular tasks such as browsing, multitasking, taking pictures and so on do not pose a challenge for this device. The touchscreen is responsive, apps load quickly and some of the best games currently available run smoothly on the device with no hitches.
For its price, Oppo Reno Z features a capable but not so great camera. The camera is not downright terrible but it is not versatile enough to make it useful in every situation. There is a dual sensor rear camera setup which features a 48MP sensor with f/1.7 lens and a 5MP (f/2.4) depth-sensing camera. There is no ultra-wide –angle or telephoto lens which can be found in most modern smartphones of the mid-range level and above.
This is a major drawback for the device, noticeable when taking group selfies or panoramic shots with larger fields of view. Normal shots taken with the device come out really good without looking muted or overly saturated. In outdoor settings, Oppo Reno Z is not capable of capturing long or wide shots with great colour or detail accuracy.
Also, the AI camera tech did not handle exposure very well. Close-up shots turn out fine as autofocus is very fast. Some of the available camera modes are Portrait, Night mode, HDR and Panorama. Pictures taken in low-light settings looked good enough as there is Dual-LED flash to help improve picture quality under such conditions. The front-facing secondary camera is 32MP (f/2.0). This camera captures high quality images for sharing across social media. Overall, camera performance is good but not great.
With its 4035mAh non-removable Li-Po battery, Oppo Reno Z is capable of lasting a whole day on a single full charge with medium usage. The 20W VOOC fast charging technology enabled on the device means you can quickly power up your phone whenever it runs out of power.
Recommending Oppo Reno Z is quite easy for a potential buyer on a budget. The device has a premium design, with some flagship specs to go with it. It is lacking a bit in the camera compartment if what you seek is a great camera phone but is capable of capturing great images too. The phone’s performance is good, so is the battery life. Fast charging ensures you can quickly power up the device if the battery runs low.
